Shoot-Outs? Shoot Me Now

Clearly, the Football League has thought that Sepp has been too quiet for too long and come up with an idea so stupid that even Mr Blatter wouldn't go there (never say never though).

Apparently, if the idea gains enough support, it will be presented as a motion for a rule change at the Football League's annual general meeting in June. Meanwhile, The Guardian reports that FIFA are vaguely supporting it, i.e. they're waiting to see if the idea gains any real support before claiming it as their own.

Seriously though, a change like this would almost change the way the game is played beyond all recognition, with teams playing cagier football, looking for the shootout, hardly something that makes the game more attractive. At least under the current system, most teams will look for that extra goal to win the game; the recent West Ham v Spurs game is a good classic example.

I'll leave Arsene Wenger to finish off this post with his comments:
"I saw this in my first year managing in Japan - it did not have spectacular results. In extra-time they played a sudden death goal and if no-one scored they had penalties. The draw is part of the culture of the game and I would not like that to disappear."

It's a problem that needs a solution. There's always a coin flip or the drawing straws. I hate penalties. How about they continue playing until one scores, but you got to have more than 3 substitutes.

But it's not a problem...if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
