Admissions

Eriksson has admitted that if England win the World Cup, he would consider a new job. Fine. I'm happy with that. Is it really such a big issue? After all, isn't that his objective as England manager?

(Later): With hindsight, there is more to this story. The NOTW were silly, if not downright malicious in publishing their story, as the only party to benefit was the "newspaper". I agree with Alan that it doesn't do anyone else any favours.

It would appear that the only thing to come out of the affair is that Sven isn't very discreet during his private conversations (note the word private). So Rio is "lazy sometimes"? I'm sure that not many fans would dispute this. And is it really such a surprise that Mickey isn't completely happy? As much as he is enjoying his time at St. James, it's not the biggest relevation that he would've rather returned to his boyhood club (and Champions League winners).

Only in England would the tabloid press try to undermine the team before the tournament.

I think the bigger story should be the campaign of destabilisation being waged by the gutter press in the months leading up to a World Cup rather than a few non-committal quotes off the cuff from the Swedish Des Lynam.

What purpose other than selling their rubbish newspaper to idiots does this "sting" serve?

It's always strange for me in the US to understand sports in the tabloids. The tabloids here only care about tits and arse, and never report on sports unless it comes under the above.
Anyhoo, maybe the fact that no media of any kind give a wet slap about the US's World Cup campaign is really a blessing. The team is still toilet, but no one is too wound up about it.
